The chapters are allocated to five sections, which are followed by nine appendices. The first four sections cover in-depth descriptions of diseases, and section five a more problem-orientated approach is used. This is particularly helpful for the clinician when establishing a list of differential diagnoses during clinical problem solving.

The first chapter of each section is a review of diagnostic techniques available for the types of micro-organisms covered in that section. These chapters are intended to provide additional general information for the clinician on choosing the most appropriate diagnostic test and sample material, and to aid with interpretation of test results.

The appendices have been updated extensively and complement the rest of the book, while adding significantly to its usefulness in a small animal practice. Cross references are given frequently throughout the book.

This is a comprehensive, well-illustrated, detailed reference that enables the reader to familiarise themselves with a topic in-depth. It provides a good resource of clinically-relevant information; a must-have for the bookshelf of every small animal practitioner and specialist alike.

Anita Schwartz, Veterinary Times, Vol. 37 No. 5, 19th February 2007
