President Obama declared that inequality is the defining challenge of our time. Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Senator Bernie Sanders agree that poor international trade agreements have contributed significantly to the loss of millions of American jobs and have caused a massive increase in inequality. Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said, One of the reasons that we are in such bad shape is that we have mismanaged globalization. Our economic policies encourage the outsourcing of jobs: Goods produced abroad with cheap labor can be cheaply brought back into the United States. The high level of inequality in the United States today, and its enormous increase during the past 30 years, is the cumulative result of an array of policies, programs and laws. At the same time, he proposes a Manufacturing Tax of Zero, which would lower taxes for U.S. manufacturers and encourage them to stay in the United States and bring other manufacturers back home. He proposes counteracting the destructive policies that Prof. Stiglitz said has caused the decline in our middle class. Joseph also proposes increasing in minimum wages, single-payer national health insurance, regulation of unpaid internships, limits on bank fees, the reduction of student loan debt and the reform of our regressive income tax system.

Author Information

Joel D. Joseph is that author of 15 books, including Black Mondays: Worst Decisions of the Supreme Court. Mr. Joseph is an economist (Northwestern University) and a lawyer (Georgetown University). He is founder and chairman of the Made in the USA Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting American-made products. He testified and lobbied successfully for the American Automobile Labeling Act and the Country of Origin Labeling Act. These federal laws provide consumers with information about where products are made.
