Hanfried Helmchen war von 1971–1999 Direktor der Psychiatrischen Klinik der Freien Universität Berlin. Er ist seit 1993 Mitglied der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina. Er war von 1995–2004 Mitglied der Zentralen Ethikkommission bei der Bundesärztekammer, von 1998–2005 Chairman des Medical Ethics Committee der World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) sowie von 1970–1996 Berater der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO).
