OverviewDuring its 12 year operation, the acclaimed Community Treatment Project (CTP) proved a pioneer of individualized intervention with young offenders. Based in California, the CTP essentially instituted and legitimized community-based programming as a viable option for both national and international corrections. The subject of intervention with young offenders is of great importance globally and this project has provided those working in the field throughout the world with a great example of how to follow such intervention. The Community Treatment Project field-tested many of the strategies and techniques for working with serious delinquents that are now commonplace, such as staff/youth matching and group homes. As did the CTP itself, the book draws from an underlying developmental view of adolescence and its challenges. In reflecting such a perspective, and in the light of society's fundamental need and right to long-term protection, the book presents an ethical and pragmatic approach rationale for setting goals that highlight personal and emotional growth and new types and levels of social skills.
