OverviewThis book of Indian Nature Myths is, so far as I am aware, the first of its kind to be published. The Myths contained in its pages are fifty in number. They begin with Creation and end with Death, and are drawn from various sources, of which the most important are the ""Vedas"" (including the ""Aitareya-,"" ""Taittirya-"" and ""Shatapatha-Brahmanas ""); the Indian Epics, ""Mahâbhârata"" and ""Ramayana""; the "" Puranas "" and the classical Sanskrit literature, and, lastly, the Folk-lore of the country. The stories seek to explain natural phenomena, and many of them bear a marked resemblance to the fables of Greece and Rome, with which, no doubt, they have a common origin. If this volume succeeds in arousing an interest in the little-known literature of Indo-Aryan Nature Myths I shall feel well rewarded for my labours.
