Reviews

Sarrazin's book is a streetwise, hands-on, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic guide to India's musical traditions. Including India's northern classical style, folk, Bollywood, and the boisterous bhangra dance, the book is the perfect introduction to the music of the world's largest democracy. In a work of love filled with cultural insights and a teacher's creativity in making India's varied musics accessible, Sarrazin brings intelligence to performing and appreciating India's multifaceted musical traditions. -- David Reck A comprehensive and accessible textbook on various genres of Indian music-classical, folk, film, and popular. An excellent resource for music educators. Sarrazin brings a depth of insider knowledge to her work based on her research and performance of the music and immersion in the culture. -- Marie McCarthy This is an excellent introduction, with many practical teaching ideas, for presenting the music of India. It is especially appropriate for music educators interested in introducing students to a broader array of the world's musics and addressing our multicultural musical mandate in the classroom. -- Anderson, William M.
