OverviewThe Indian elephant belongs to the genus Elephas and is classified as Elephas maximus indicus. While the Asian elephant species is divided into three subspecies, the Indian elephant is the most numerous and widely distributed. Their populations, however, remain fragmented due to deforestation, urbanization, and human expansion, leaving them vulnerable despite their once widespread dominance. Indian elephants are slightly smaller than African elephants, standing between 2 and 3.5 meters tall at the shoulder and weighing between 3,000 and 5,000 kilograms. Their bodies are stocky yet graceful, with domed foreheads and relatively smaller ears adapted to the forested habitats of South and Southeast Asia. These smaller ears are an adaptation to their environment, as they do not need the same expansive ear size required by African elephants for cooling in hotter savanna climates. The trunk, a fusion of the upper lip and nose, is highly dexterous with a single finger-like projection at the tip, used to grasp, manipulate, and sense the environment.
