OverviewThis assessment examines the hazards, risks and controls that relate to carrying out decontamination at an incident involving a hazardous substance. Decontamination can be split into two distinct activities depending of the type of incident being attended. Firstly there are incidents of a traditional hazardous material nature, predominantly involving the decontamination of fire crews and equipment. Secondly incidents involving terrorist activity and the resultant mass decontamination of casualties. This assessment does not cover mass decontamination. Depending on the nature and scale of the incident a variety of significant hazards may be present. Therefore contents of other specific generic risk assessments may need to be considered.
