The Sunday shift didn't bring much more joy, as again I was loaded with the response radio I had to attend a horrific scene. A lad from the other house block was due to be released the following day. I still don't know the reason for what happened, but I responded to the alarm to find him sat in the servery surrounded by officers. Another lad had filled his pot noodle tub with boiling water and sugar and thrown it over him, his skin had been stripped from his body, from his chin to his belly button. It was an absolutely horrendous sight. 'Incarcerated' is based on true events that took place in England. The book enables the reader to experience the unknown by stepping into the shoes of a Prison Custody Officer at a Young Offender Institution for boys. A year in the life uncovers the real situations seen through the officer's eyes. The detail involved in the gruelling training program, day to day running of the wings, the horror of the boys past and present lives, and not forgetting the humour. Mixing officers with fifteen to nineteen year old boys could do nothing else but deliver an explosive, touching and powerful story. This is a very eye opening, enjoyable piece of work, in which V.B unites comedy, drama and terror to produce an addictive read.
