He served in the U. S. Army Reserves. He started college at the University of Southern California and served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon)in Hawaii. He received a Bachelors and a Masters Degree from Brigham Young University with emphasis on Economics, Asian Studies, and Political Science. He taught Economics at Chabot College in Hayward, California, for ten years and was a California State Assemblyman for six years. He was Mayor and on the City Council of Pleasanton, California. He has been a Businessman and an International Business Consultant. He is the President/CEO of the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) in Washington, D.C. APAICS is an organization dedicated to promoting Asian Pacific American participation and representation at all levels of the political process from community service to elective office. He has been the National Executive Director/CEO of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), the oldest and largest Asian American civil rights organization in the United States. He was President and Vice President on the National Board of the JACL. He was working for the JACL on March 11, 2011, when the massive earthquake and tsunami struck Japan. He was involved with helping the victims in Japan in the aftermath of the tsunami. He has spoken and written extensively about civil rights and the Japanese American experience of World War II when 120,000 persons of Japanese ethnicity were forcibly removed from their west coast homes and incarcerated in camps in remote and desolate areas of the country. Because he was living in Utah as a small child, he did not personally experience the incarceration. He has studied the issue and has written about that period of history and about subsequent happenings within the Asian American community. Some of his work has been published in a book entitled, The Japanese American Story As Told Through a Collection of Speeches and Articles (www.thejapaneseamericanstory.tateauthor.com).
