Overview

Amid the outcry concerning the legitimacy of elected officials, we overlook the unelected civil servants in federal, state, and local governments who truly uphold democracy. Contrary to unfounded deep state conspiracies, these 22 million people are the analysts, scientists, lawyers, accountants, educators, consultants, enforcers of regulations, and first responders who keep the country running and its people safe. Yet to the general public, their contributions are hidden--until now. Cedric Alexander argues that when those we elect descend into tribalism, criminal malfeasance, and emulation of totalitarianism, it is the apolitical fourth branch of government that can save the nation.
