"In the closing days of WWII, African-American Marine Willy Harmon is pulled from kitchen duty and thrown into the invasion of a remote Pacific atoll. When the attack fails, Harmon's squad narrowly escapes execution. Hiding in the treacherous jungle, they cross paths with unlikely survivors of the Japanese occupation. But as their bellies rumble and night rolls in, tensions of race and nation flare, forcing Harmon to untie the group despite comrades' prejudices and his growing self-doubt. Stalking the group is their would-be executioner, Sergeant Nakamura. Disillusioned with the warlords' guise of ""honor,"" Nakamura sees carrying out Harmon's sentence as a last victory before his once-mighty Empire is crushed. An amazing book from cover to cover. The imagery this book brings is like any other, I truly feel like I am immersed with the characters. My wife and I are hoping for a part two! A thrilling story that was so difficult to put down! Mayall masterfully uses imagery and made me feel like a part of the adventure. I can't wait to see more from this author! Fresh from reading a non-fiction WWII book, I picked up Imperial Sundown and REALLY enjoyed it. Solid character development and the story moved right along. At no time was I bored - definitely a strong recommendation if you're into historical novels/fiction. This book has a really driving plot that will keep you interested from start to finish (and that's saying a lot for someone with a short attention span like me!). Definitely recommend for yourself or as a gift to others! As someone who usually doesn't reach for a war novel, I was pleasantly surprised with Imperial Sundown. The storyline was exhilarating and kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting to read more. Awesome character development - I found myself rooting for certain characters by the end of it. This novel has redifined my opinion of historical fiction and has made a fan of war novels. Great read! Highly reccomend this book!!! Have you ever read a book so good, you hoped it wouldn't end? This is that book. With tight writing and vivid scenes that draw you in from the first sentence, Mayall has redefined the war novel.
