Imperial Power and Pastille From Medicine to Art

Overview

As a special form of traditional Chinese medicine, pastille can be used both internally and externally. The Qing Dynasty court chose the Spindle medicine (pastille) as the carrier to showcase the court's medical culture. The focus exceeded the therapeutic effect of the medicine, also including the technical process and specific design of medicine production. Emperor Yongzheng established the ""Pastille Workshop"" in the Imperial Workshops upon his accession to the throne. During his reign, he gradually standardized the production, shape, packaging, and transportation of pastilles. Through the process of ""issuing an imperial decree to presenting,"" a standardized operation process for the preparation of court pastilles was formed, spreading the influence of royal power and culture while retaining the characteristics of TCM. This book explores the appearance in the development history of Chinese medicine by sorting out the naming origins and functional evolution of pastille, then demonstrates its unique medical value and cultural attributes in the development process of traditional Chinese medicine. We chose the pastilles collected in the Palace Museum as the point of penetration, systematically combs through the types, quantities, shapes, and other aspects of pastille production during the 13 years of the Yongzheng Dynasty in the Huoji Files (the ledger of the Imperial Workshops of the Qing Palace, which records daily articles of the imperial palace), and combines them with the existing molds and samples of pastilles in the Palace Museum to explore the influence of the intervention of imperial power on the evolution process and characteristics of Qing Palace pastilles and their fittings.
