Update to Preface of 7th edition On page ix it is stated that the contents of the book reflects the law as at 1 September 2010. This is of particular importance when reading the Immigration Rules, as the July 2010 changes have not been included. Apologies to anyone inconvenienced by this. Author Information

Margaret Phelan is a barrister at Renaissance Chambers practicing in immigration and nationality law with a particular focus on family related immigration. She sits as a tribunal judge at the Asylum Support and Social Security Tribunals and has been an Editor of the Immigration Law Handbook since the fifth edition. James Gillespie practiced as a barrister specializing in immigration, asylum, and nationality law for 16 years before retiring from the bar in 2009. He has also taught and lectured widely on immigration law. During his years of practice he was recognized as one of the leading practitioners in the field of immigration law by the Chambers and Partners Guide to the UK Legal Professions. Prior to going to the bar he spent 7 years working for the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, advising on immigration law and representing clients in immigration appeals. He was a founder member of the Immigration Law Practitioners Association and served on its executive committee until 1992.
