Overview

Imaging has always played an important part in the diagnosis of the various problems associated with the genitalia and reproductive organs. Diagnostic applications for patients have evolved over past decades, however imaging has not progressed as rapidly for male patients as for female patients. Imaging has now earned a significant place in the diagnostic armory for women. In recent years, there has been increasing awareness of male health issues - in particular the rising incidence of testicular tumors. Inevitably this has resulted in both an increased demand for imaging of the male genitalia and higher expectations of these studies.During the last decade the development of high resolution ultrasound equipment, Doppler and color Doppler have revolutionized the approach to imaging the external genitalia. Contrast radiography and nuclear medicine have been largely replaced by ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).Designed as a problem-solving text, Imaging of the Scrotum and Penis employs a symptom-related approach, starting with the clinical history and physical examination, progressing to the appropriate imaging modalities. It provides both an overview and an in-depth analysis of the various imaging approaches used in the evaluation of diseases of the external male genitalia. The main imaging modality used for the scrotum is ultrasound, and discussion of ultrasound images (including color Doppler studies) comprises the largest part of the book. The place of problem-solving MRI studies and their interpretation is also discussed in great detail together with the more minor roles played by other modalities: isotope studies, CT, plain radiography and angiography. Imaging and applications of the newer imaging techniques that evaluate the penis, the anterior urethra and erectile dysfunction are also evaluated. Generous use is made of flow diagrams and diagnostic tables and the text is comprehensively illustrated. Imaging of the Scrotum and Penis will be of interest to radiologists - especially diagnostic radiologists who must understand the embryology, anatomy, pathology and imaging findings in the variety of clinical problems that can and do affect the male patient. It will also be of value to urologists, primary care health providers, sonographers and other imaging technologists and assist the referring clinician in deciding which imaging study should be initially ordered - a particularly important issue in the era of cost containment in medicine.Key Features:* Uses a symptom-related approach, starting with the clinical history and physical examination, progressing to the appropriate imaging modalities* Provides both an overview and an in-depth analysis of the various imaging approaches used in the evaluation of diseases of the external male genitalia* Illustrated with over 690 photographs, diagrams and tables
