Overview

Can you imagine if God decided to have a little creative fun, changing the colors of many of the things He had done! Using His brushes, He changed the whole scene. He made the grass blue and the sky a neon green. Can you imagine the colors He would change, or how our world would look strange.

Reviewed By Lois Henderson Authored by great-grandmother Nita Marie Clark, who started writing books at the grand old age of 79, Imagine If God... is a picture book written in rhyming couplets, which are brightly and imaginatively illustrated with full-page color illustrations by Kathy N. Doherty. God is imagined playfully recoloring nature anew in a whole range of alternative colors and patterns until He decides to turn all people plaid. The view of God as being a creative playmate should prove to be a welcome concept to those who might have already had God introduced to them as an omnipotent and omniscient being yes, He is indeed awesome, but in the nicest possible way! As most children love to draw and paint, Imagine If God... should find an eager audience that will only too readily appreciate the idea of an alternatively colored universe. I loved the idea of God as the illustrator of His own handiwork, and for Him being considered as having the latitude to not always play the patriarchal role, but also to allow Himself the freedom to get down and dirty. The cross-cultural acceptance that is implicit in the text means that the work is ideal for use in a multicultural setting, such as in a mixed classroom or Sunday School setting. The empathy that God has for nature is so warm and compassionate that any receptive reader should feel in tune with the harmonious spirit of the text. No matter their background, all children should be able to relate to Nita Marie Clark's text with relative ease. Review By Jamie Lee Wandel Imagine If God is a fun little book! I was drawn to the concept of the book which is that God plays a game, painting recognizable things in nature different colors. We see silver rivers and golden grass. Finally, God cannot choose a color for people and makes a plaid pattern of different colors. Imagine If God definitely encourages readers to think about what they see in a new way. It is an exercise in opening up the imagination which can lead us toward gratitude and also gives space for compassion. Since how things look is not our choice but God's, we don't have to judge it in the same way. I enjoyed Imagine If God, but I think more detailed and realistic illustrations would have made it better. I would have loved to see more imaginative images to go along with the theme of the book. That said, Nita Marie Clark does a great job rhyming words within the story in a way that really works. I think this book would be a great lesson starter and I might recommend this book to a Sunday school teacher as it does refer to Christian themes. As a teacher myself, I could see myself using this book to introduce a warm-up activity or even start a discussion about the plurality of beauty. I think this book has a lot of potential if you use it as a part of a lesson.
