OverviewThe Felton Painter is an anonymous Apulian ceramographer, isolated in 1964 by A. D. Trendall, who ran a workshop in the first half of the 4th century BC., almost certainly in Taranto. The production of this workshop was aimed at the funerary ritual and takes advantage of a substantial number of documented provenances. From an iconographic point of view, it is varied in the representation of traditional figurative themes, such as myth, epic, theatre, dionysian and erotic ritual. In many of these subjects it is possible to identify distinctive elements, such as how the parody of certain mythical episodes was expressed. But the main interest of this craftsman and his workshop seems to consist above all in having drawn the scatological and grotesque iconography relevant to real-life contexts from the repertoire of attic vases and in having developed it in a singular way within the context of southern Italian ceramography.
