Overview

English Summary: Building on the analysis of international research, and through careful examination of the available documentation, this study intends to reconstruct actions and functions of one of the most important and powerful municipal offices in the Catalan capital: the Consulate of the Sea. The research unfolds on several complementary levels, starting from the first traces left by the Consulate in the thirteenth century. Between the end of the fourteenth and through the fifteenth century, the institution became the protagonist of a real leap forward, thanks to the development of functions related to the administration of maritime-mercantile justice and the elaboration of economic policy projects. Having now gained the ability to negotiate with the various local (city governments and the Crown) and international (Consulates, foreign and Christian powers) subjects, as well as with indispensable powers in terms of taxation, the Consulate established itself as a place for defending economic and political interests. Italian Description: Prendendo le mosse dall'analisi delle ricerche di ambito internazionale, e attraverso l'attento spoglio della documentazione disponibile, questo studio intende ricostruire azioni e funzioni di uno dei piu importanti e potenti uffici municipali della capitale catalana: il Consolato del mare. La ricerca si snoda su piu piani complementari, a partire dalle prime tracce lasciate dal Consolato nel Duecento. Tra la fine del XIV e il pieno XV secolo l'istituzione divenne protagonista di un vero e proprio salto in avanti, grazie allo sviluppo delle funzioni relative all'amministrazione della giustizia marittimo-mercantile e l'elaborazione di progetti di politica economica. Avendo ormai maturato capacita di negoziazione coi diversi soggetti locali (governi cittadini e Corona) e internazionali (Consolati, poteri stranieri cristiani e non), nonche indispensabili competenze in termini di fiscalita, il Consolato si affermo come luogo di difesa di interessi economici e politici.
