Overview

This volume presents the proceedings of the II Jornadas Predoctorales en Estudios de la Antigüedad y de la Edad Media, held at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, on the 19, 20 and 21st November 2014. The book follows the principal subdivision of the conference sessions: Ancient East; Greece, from Archaic to Hellenistic Times; Republican, Imperial and Late Antique Rome; Early Medieval Literature; Late Middle Ages and Humanism. The papers focus on the use of the texts in different sciences of Antiquity and Middle Ages (History, Archaeology, Philology, etc.) and how that use is a common tool to study the past, considering the literary source as the main nexus among disciplines. Quoting Thucydides, a text is a ?t?µa ?? a?e? (an eternal possession), so, even though the papers in this volume deal with different chronologies and subjects, the approach of the study is always based on texts.

"Núria Olaya Montero (Barcelona, 1987) graduated in Classical Philology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB, 2010). During the 2007-2008 academic year, she was awarded an exchange grant to study five months (February-June) at the Venice International University (Italy). She earned a Master's degree in Antiquity and Middle Ages from UAB (2011). She is currently completing her PhD on the Classical and Oriental sources on the northern borders of the Sasanian Empire. From March 2011 to December 2014, she collaborated with the Research Project Fontes Eurasiae Septentrionalis Antiquae et Medii Aevii (directed by Dr. A. Alemany) as a Senior Technician in Research Support. Since March 2011, she is the secretary of Faventia. Journal of the Department of Antiquity and Middle Ages Studies (UAB). Manuel Montoza Coca (Ripollet, 1990) graduated in Classical Philology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB, 2012), receiving the Extraordinary Award of his promotion. He earned aMaster's degree in Prehistory, Antiquity and Middle Ages from the same university (2013). Nowadays, he is a PhD student, working on a critical edition of the Sermones of the bishop of Barcelona Don Martín García, under the supervision of Cándida Ferrero Hernández and Mercedes García-Arenal Rodríguez. He was granted a FI-DGR scholarship by the Catalan Government in 2015 and he also collaborates on the Project ""Islamolatina: The perception of Islam in Latin Europe"". Alba Aguilera Felipe (Cornellà, 1987) graduated in Classical Philology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB, 2011). She earned a Master's degree in Prehistory, Antiquity and Middle Ages (UAB, 2012). She is currently a PhD student in Cultures in Contact in the Mediterranean (UAB, since 2013). She is a Research fellow (FPU, Ministry of Education, Government of Spain) at the Department of Sciences of Antiquity and Middle Ages of the UAB (since 2013). Roser Gómez Guiu (Eivissa, 1989) graduated in Classical Philology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB, 2011). She earned a Master's degree in Prehistory, Antiquity and Middle Ages (UAB, 2012). Currently, she is doing her PhD in Mycenaean Greek. Her thesis topic is a lexical study of the cult personnel present in linear B tablets and its evolution in the I millennium BC. In 2013, she was granted a PIF scholarship by the Department of Sciences of Antiquity and Middle Ages (UAB).
