DON'T SEE ANOTHER DOCTOR BEFORE READING THIS BOOK: This book gave me new insights, exact understandings, and a practical guide. I wrote down all the questions I needed to ask my doctor. It was the first time in all the years I've attended consultations with doctors for myself and family members that I felt empowered to ask all right questions. Steve R. EVERY PATIENT AND DOCTOR SHOULD READ THIS: Wow, this book pulled no punches and was so well written and researched. I had no idea of Informed Consent or its scope. As I read sections of this book, I thought of different family members who had not questioned their doctors enough... This is an important book every patient, doctor and drug company employee should read. Not to be too cliched, but it is literally a matter of life and death. Andrea K. A comprehensive evaluation of both traditional and complementary medicine in the U.S. This book is the vital step to providing excellent health care. Laura Berke RN FNP Meridith Berk describes the terrible health situation in the United States and she gives good, workable, easy to understand and implement advice on how individuals can resolve the problem in their own lives. The United States' health system, she tells us, is sick. The average life span of its citizens is less than in many other developed countries. Something needs to be done to save lives. We can do it. Her book is important, because it works. It is the kind of book that one should read more than once. It is filled with essential information in forty-two chapters. The book addresses many health matters. It speaks about a patient's rights and gives a history of how and why the concept was developed. It tells about informed consent, how to make a medical decision based upon what a doctor says, how much information is enough, when to get a second opinion, a doctor's concern about offering too much information, what to do when you do not understand what the doctor is saying, drugs, side effects of prescription medicine, mental problems and their treatments, and what happens to people who do nothing. She tells also about alternatives, other systems that help, the risks involved, and she lists what conditions each helps, such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage, physical therapy, traditional Chinese Medicine, mind-body therapies, Yoga, and many more. She also talks about many other important conditions and treatments, such as pain, for over 100 million US adults suffer from pain. This sampling of only a small fraction of what this book contains shows that Meridith Berk has offered her readers lots of significant information. Israel D. If Only My Doctor Had Told Me Your Rights as a Patient and the Law that Protects You is a marvelous book that every person on this planet should read. It deals with a lot of issues that a lot of people take for granted. A lot of people and I sometimes catch myself doing it consider the words that come out of a doctor lips to be the absolute truth. After having some personal struggles with my health, I started seeing doctors as they really are. They are human beings like us with weaknesses, and they do make a lot of mistakes. I had to go to a lot of doctors until I finally managed to find one that actually cures me. The fact that in the USA the third reason of deaths after heart diseases and cancer is mistakes made by doctors! Says a lot. This book is a breath of fresh air for people who want to fins out more of what the medical system is offering and also it provides a plethora of alternative medicine which I found very useful. Highly Recommended. KM
