OverviewIf Beaver Fights Eagle shows how--despite being close allies in World War II and in multiple lesser conflicts since--for over a century Canada and the United States have quietly planned for a contingency each considered unthinkable: war between them on the North American continent. At least, it was unthinkable prior to Donald Trump. The book begins with a detailed look at the earliest Canadian (Defence Scheme No. 1) and American (War Plan Red (Crimson)) from the 1920s and 1930s, with a complete copy of both plans included as appendices. It then updates how the Canadian Armed Forces' ups and downs from World War I through the early 2010s set the stage for the present status of forces in North America. It also provides suggestions to Canadian policymakers on what practical steps they can take in the immediate and near future to deter, or failing that, to maximize the chances Canada has of winning, any conflict with the United States. It also has a redacted copy, obtained by the author under the Canadian Access to Information Act, of Canada's current contingency invasion plan, OPPLAN NEPTUNE STRIKE, as well as a full description of the delaying action fought by the Pentagon to avoid responding to a similar request under the American Freedom of Information Act for the U.S.'s war plan.
