OverviewAs the Battle Hymn of the Republic was the anthem for the Union troops, so I Wish I Was in Dixie became the rallying call of the Confederacy. Composed by Daniel Decatur Emmett from Ohio, the song draws on the popularity of the black-face minstrel shows and is likely responsible for making Dixie synonymous with the Old South. While the lyrics of the song have been challenged for being politically incorrect, that was not the case when Abraham Lincoln had the song played at Union political rallies and civil rights leaders sang the song during freedom marches in the 1960s. Dixie has endured many interpretations to become an American anthem no less popular than America the Beautiful and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Dixie has become part of the American lexicon, in such phrases as Whistling Dixie. Elvis Presley featured the song in his American Trilogy along with All My Trials and The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
