Melba Patillo Beals earned a bachelor's degree from San Francisco State University and a graduate degree from Columbia University, and she worked as a reporter for NBC. Warriors Don't Cry was an ALA Notable Book for 1995 and won the 1995 Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Book Award. Myra Lucretia Taylor has appeared on Broadway in Nine (for which she won a Tony Award), Macbeth, Electra, Mule Bone, and A Streetcar Named Desire. Her film and television credits include Law & Order, OZ, Changing Lanes, Unfaithful, and Everyone Says I Love You. She is the recipient of six Earphones Awards and is also a Fox Fellow.
