OverviewSince 2015 Heike Steinweg has been taking portraits of women living in exile in Berlin. They have not only escaped from war but also from the sexual discrimination they suffered at home. These women are from extremely diverse cultural, regional, and social backgrounds. What they all have in common is the courage and the will to start afresh. Women play a crucial role in migration movements because they often take responsibilities previously denied to them. The photographer shows human beings determined to take control of their own lives and to create a new existence for themselves. She gives them a presence that visualises their dignity and individuality. Personal statements by the women accompany their portraits: brief reflections, biographical narratives, and literary prose.
