Overview

It was difficult and expensive to immigrate from Europe to America in the early 1900s. Sometimes, it became deadly. The typical emigration from rural Sweden that 15 year old Rachel Josefina Augustsdotter embarked on with her parents and her four siblings quickly developed into a complicated disaster that eventually left Rachel separated from her family and fending for herself in the dangerous environment of New York City in 1910, where every step was dangerous and every choice seemed impossible.
