Their vision is to fulfill the fundamental purpose of helping all their students reach high social, emotional, and academic achievement. This is accomplished through programming that integrates academics, technology-related and support services, occupational training, recreational/leisure activities, and community-based instruction. The school leadership deeply believes that it is their responsibility to continue to focus on student learning, commitment to high expectations, and collaboration by emphasizing professional learning, integrated literature-based learning approaches, and affirmations of cultural diversity into the curriculum. Ms. Yawson earned a BA in Social Studies (cum laude) from Harvard University, an MBA from the Wharton School, and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Her unique understanding of social issues, business, and the law has enabled her to become a relevant voice on issues as varied as race relations, women's issues, dating, parenting, self-love, hair bullying, and entrepreneurship. Her articles have been published in MSNBC's The Grio, The Huffington Post, The Atlantic, Madame Noire, and other publications. Ms. Yawson has also appeared on The Today Show, Al Jazeera's The Stream, The Nate Berkus Show, and Fox Business. In 2013, a painful experience in which a barber called her son a racial pejorative term and said that his hair was not pretty and should be shaved off inspired Ms. Yawson to venture into writing empowering children's books. Her first book, Sunne's Gift, provides the universal message of self-love and being true to one's gifts and passions. She was so touched by the story that she quit her job as senior counsel at Citigroup Inc. to start her own publishing and education company, Milestales. Through Milestales, Ms. Yawson and her partners provide books, performances, enrichment programs, and training sessions to corporations, schools, libraries, churches, prisons, institutes, and other organizations. Ms. Yawson is also a radio producer and personality who can be heard on WBAI 99.5FM Pacifica Radio. Additionally, she is an adjunct professor at Mercy College's School of Business. She currently lives in New York City with her husband and two elementary school-aged sons. Hasan Bakr was born in Savannah, Georgia. He was interested in sound and rhythm from his earliest childhood and was delighted watching his firstborn child take joy in his music, thereby repeating the cycle and developing the art. Hasan Bakr found his first musical expression in the tonal arts of the drum. Later, he expanded this exploration to incorporate voice and the mbira. Bakr has a strong rhythmic approach to sound, blending music from all parts of the world to create his uniquely contemporary sound. Aesthetic principles of clarity and patterns of rhythmic blending grow out of the traditions of African music. This music surges forth to modern times through the influence of the free-spirited avant-garde Jazz movement of the sixties and seventies. It reflects the essence of modern life in New York, where he guards the traditions of his ancestry and allows them to influence his new music. Bakr's musical education was mainly in the traditions of the master and student. He studied with Baba Femi Akinlana on conga and Chief Bey on shekere. In 1984, he did an apprenticeship with Nana Vasconcelos to explore the berimbau and body percussion. Hasan's most recent concentration has been on the timbales with the legendary Little Ray Romero. Over the past five years, Hasan has nurtured and molded a dynamic and unique vocal ability, which is apparent in the recently published videotape of the Kinetic Painting Group. Hasan Bakr is a founding member of the Spirit Ensemble, a group who pioneered the use of the mbira on the East Coast. This association of kindred spirits has become the creative environment for Hasan to mature as a composer. As a result, he has produced some performance works which range from dance to the media arts. The Spirit Ensemble is now known as the Heritage Ensemble. Hasan Bakr has performed for Amsterdam Public Television and widely in the U.S. for educational and entertainment institutions. He has published several tapes and a CD.
