OverviewThe Hávamál is a collection of poems and wise teachings ascribed to Óðinn. The three main types of wisdom shared are common sense, the value of things, and the Runes. Common sense touches on social etiquette, being prepared, building strong relationships, moderation in actions and consumptions, knowing how to ask and answer, and not making a fool of oneself. The value of things emphasizes not trusting something until it has been tested and proven trustworthy, like walking on ice or depending on the strength of a sword. The last major form of wisdom deals with the Runes: how they were won and how to use them. While offering different types of wisdom, the Hávamál also represents a person's journey through life. Starting with traveling and gaining knowledge of the world, the person learns how to converse with others, control their behaviors and consumptions, while gaining understanding and hopefully some wisdom. As they grow in wisdom, they build strong relationships and reputation through sharing and deeds. The Hávamál: Embodying Óðinn's Wisdom goes over eleven topics: awareness, guests, discipline, alcohol, self-sufficiency, respect, friendships, relationships, reputation, wisdom, and Rune magic. Each topic has stories from the Eddas and Sagas, and quotes from the Hávamál to highlight Northern beliefs and teachings.
