Hungry To Be Me: A Quest To Be My Own Hero

Overview

As a self-professed recovery advocate, Ms. Gauthier vulnerably takes her reader through the brutal process of conquering her decades-long battle with eating disorders-this memoir is extraordinarily honest and real. Her imagery of a white horse continuously escaping a pack of wolves determined to eat her as prey is nothing short of brilliant. Along with these poetic mini-fables, she strategically imbeds past journal entries in each chapter eloquently emphasizing her struggle within a decades-long quest of becoming her own hero.

Reviews

Eating disorders continue to pose a serious threat to the health and well-being of many Canadians. Women and girls especially are targeted by cultural messages about beauty and thinness that manifest all too often in body dysmorphia and life-threatening relationships with food. One critical step toward eliminating this pernicious and insidious social problem is to expose it to the light - to address it openly and honestly, in order to reduce the stigma and shame that surrounds it. Hungry to be Me by Julie Gauthier does exactly that. In this raw memoir Ms. Gauthier invites us to bear witness as she sifts through childhood memories and past relationships for clues about why this illness took hold of her and then persisted for decades. We share in her journey as she navigates the often confusing and sometimes painful path from decades of secret starvation to hospitalization to recovery. We can't help but cheer for her as she takes her life back, on her own terms, one heroic bite at a time. While she is finally able to embrace her whole self, imagined flaws and all, and allow space in her life for love, she cautions us that recovery from an eating disorder requires vigilance. Bravo Julie! As you have become your own hero, so too are you mine. Vicki L. Nygaard Professor of Sociology / Women's and Gender Studies Vancouver Island, BC Canada
