Itzkoff majored in music and social sciences in his undergraduate studies at the University of Hartford. He holds master’s and doctoral degrees in the philosophy of science and philosophy of education from Columbia University. For a number of years he was a professional cellist. He is the author of twenty-five books in various disciplines. He taught primarily at Smith College, from which he is emeritus after thirty-four years of teaching.
