OverviewIn September 1997 the Council of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) unanimously approved a regional code on HIV/AIDS and Employment (hereafter called the Code ). The intention of the Code is to create a regional standard on the best ways to manage AIDS in the employment setting. It aims to guide employers, employees and governments towards the most economically sustainable and humane ways to respond to HIV and AIDS in the workplace.The SADC is the first regional intergovernmental organization in the world to take such an initiative. This publication documents the Code and examines the reasons why the SADC adopted it.
