OverviewPeople are the most valuable asset of a nation. Education therefore, as the fostering of human resources, lies at the core of any developmental strategy. Education acquires a high priority for all nations as the rapid scientific and technological progress, budgetary difficulties, and complex demographic dynamics of the twenty-first century develop. Education and population issues, two central themes of Mexico's social agenda, are the focal points of this research, which aims to design a bridge in which science and policy options interact and converge with these issues. Medina analyses demographic trends and educational issues in various regions in Mexico, and proposes a new demography-based index to measure the educational level of a population. The study outlines the demographic and educational challenges that Mexico faces at the dawn of the twenty-first century and suggests some direct and indirect population and educational policy options to improve the general well-being of Mexican society.
