The Huebinger series of automotive publications were popular a century ago as adventurous motorists braved the primitive roads and uncertain terrain of Iowa and beyond. Noted landmarks on these roadmaps include schools, houses, churches, piles of stumps, unusual rocks, cemeteries, and windmills. Today, these map collections are actually history books showing how towns and cities have developed, roads have changed, and some communities have disappeared.The original 1915 edition of Huebinger's Pocket Automobile Guide for Iowa was printed in 6 by 8.5 inch size. This 2012 reprint edition is a scanned reproduction which has been enlarged to 8.5 by 11 inches. Each page has been individually re-sized at high resolution and color-corrected in order to brighten colors, darken faded type, and eliminate the orange color of aged paper. This Guide was scanned directly from the 1915 original, not from a later scanning.Enlarging the pages brought details into view that would have needed a magnifying glass to see 100 years ago. A modern magnifying glass will bring even more detail to the attention of readers who are interested in the history of Iowa as recorded within this booklet of maps and advertisements.The booklet includes detailed maps of all 99 Iowa counties, maps of selected Iowa cities, and more than 40 pages of vintage advertisements for automotive and travel goods and services. Many of these would be suitable for framing. Major highways are in red and are identifed by name. Maps show cities, towns, townships, rivers, and other natural features.
