As luck would have it, they get one to share! Luckily, they have some protective parents that know that technology is not always the best for children. They make the rule that the tablet can only be used under supervision. But what kids could resist using a brand new tablet on their own? So one night, they sneak the table away and start playing a game that they both enjoy. Unbeknownst to them, their fun was going to be interrupted by a cyber bully. Neither of them had experienced such a thing, so they were rightfully very scared by the whole thing. After confessing to their parents about what they had done, the family sits down together and has an important discussion about how tablets have their place, and also what to avoid. They address cyber bullying, of course, as well as limiting screen times, keeping private information private, and the reasons that parental supervision is needed. It's a great conversation that all families need to have. I really loved this book for several reasons. I have a two year old granddaughter who loves watching videos on her tablet. The only thing she has access to is a children's app with strict parental controls. However, I know that when she's older, she will be able to figure out how to get to more sites and see and hear things that may not be appropriate for her. This book reminded me that in a couple of years, I'm going to need to have this conversation with her myself. You can't be too careful in protecting your little ones in this age of technology. I also loved all of the information at the back of the book, after the story. There is a cute activity for kids and further tips and recommendations for them to stay safe when they're online. The really cool thing, though, is that there is also a tips and recommendations section, and a list of additional resources for the adults. It explains further how they can keep their kids safe. I'd never seen this before in a children's book, and I thought it was a great addition. The book is also nice to look at. The pictures are fun and actually very relaxing to look at. They have a soft, hand-painted quality that is really beautiful, and actually lends to the seriousness of the book's subject matter. I definitely recommend this book, especially to parents who have kids who are beginning to use internet resources. It will help them to begin the conversation, and they'll be prepared with lots of information to make sure their security is tight. It's highly important that we keep our kids safe online, and teach them how to stay safe themselves.
