This was one of the best purchases made to help my writing in a long time, and it's a perfect aid in researching how to write Black characters as well-rounded, realistic people instead of harmful tropes. If you're still in the early stages of drafting your writing and not ready for a sensitivity read yet, this book is the best place to get answers to questions you have, and might not even know you have. It's well written, succinct, and encompasses a lot of tropes that can be harmful in your writing. It gives you great ideas on how to navigate stereotypes, how to flesh out characters and situations they're in without falling into harmful writing practices. Gared Sparrowson I've been to so many classes at writing conferences about writing diversity and the sentiment is always ""don't mess it up"", but the presenters never tell you specifically how to do that. People leave feeling even more confused and afraid they can't include diverse characters in their books because they don't know enough about how to properly portray them. This book is a comprehensive (yet incomplete and open-ended) guide to learning how to write non-token black characters that are realistic and impactful. I would highly recommend it! Lydia M
