How to Make a Career in Science: Steps For Starting A Science Careers

Overview

This book is aimed at both young academics and experienced professors. With a lot of luck, one or the other politician will read it and find suggestions for shaping the German scientific landscape. (I do not use gender-related spellings here - women and men are always addressed equally.) In their day-to-day work with young scientists at all career levels, older scientists have to repeatedly provide help and advice so that young people can make progress and do not run into dead ends. Unfortunately, I found out that there is often too little basic knowledge on both sides to successfully carry out a joint advisory process. On the other hand, in the role of a mentor in a women's mentor program of the Helmholtz Association, I got to know how good and stimulating a joint advisory process can be for both young scientists and experienced mentors. It was a great pleasure for me when I met a young scientist several years later after I had been allowed to advise her, and she thanked me warmly because our conversations had apparently helped her. This book is therefore intended to fill two gaps: On the one hand, it is intended to provide an example of a few basics that a young scientist can follow in his career planning. Not every young scientist will have or use the opportunity to consult with older colleagues. With the advice listed here, he should get a certain basic equipment for decision-making Not every young scientist will have or use the opportunity to consult with older colleagues. With the advice listed here, he should get a certain basic equipment for decision-making Not every young scientist will have or use the opportunity to consult with older colleagues. With the advice listed here, he should get a certain basic equipment for decision-making who can be operated on. On the other hand, this guide is primarily intended to catalyze the advisory process between young and more experienced scientists. The tips listed here can be used as a basic framework for a consultation or for mentoring, which you can use as a guide or get suggestions for the discussions. The advisor cannot replace conversation and the exchange of experiences between young and older scientists, but rather serve as a basis, stimulus and catalyst for a good, interactive counseling process. It would be particularly nice if a few of the considerations also led to the further development of the German scientific landscape.
