Overview

In How to Grow Wings, Lyn C. reveals the compelling life of Bill Brosco, a young man the US Air Forde sent off to a Cold War he wanted no part of. His father had signed him up for the Army when he was just seventeen. The son of a Polish immigrant, Bill had little to offer the military, or so he thought. But the military wanted just that: boys who could fix things, boys who wanted to learn, and Bill was that boy. The more important jobs he could do for the U.S. Air Force as a young engineer, the more difficult assignments the USAF gave him, all in the deadliest places in the world. His remarkable journey got around to companies in the States, like Chrysler who needed just such a man to work on the very first Redstones, Jupiters and Saturns under the great Dr. Wernher von Braun, a position that he thought would give him courage to seek love and a real life, but nothing could prepare him for the terrifying evil that he had to face alone. Stafford uses Brosco's story as a gateway into the history, the tumult that was the Cold War, the search for piece, the threat of war, and the cutting edge of science in the race to space. This is global history through the eyes of a young man full of dreams.

As medical editor for the Alabama Journal of Medical Science, the King Faisal Specialist Hospital, and the Southern Medical Journal, Lyn C.'s career took her around the world. Stafford spent many years and actually enjoys doing research for others in dusty archives, always on the lookout for first-hand stories, fascinating accounts of someone who has lived history, whose story can shed light on history as it has been portrayed. In the years since her medical editing career, she has written poems that have appeared in works by the Poetry Guild and the Alabama Poetry Society, and has moved back to Birmingham, Alabama to be with family. Her hobbies include sharing books, music, games, ideas, and travel--especially warm days fishing in the Gulf with family and friends.
