Overview

I, Dan, like so many people in the world today, have suffered inordinately throughout my life. This is not my fault, I have learned. Through a lifetime of chronic health conditions and suicidal depression, plus two decades of study and dedicated practice in healing and spiritual awakening, I have come to understand that my personal struggles are inextricably intertwined with the collective, external, and objective conditions of the world. Obviously, right? How could it be otherwise? My severe health issues stem from a pernicious corporate takeover of the world beginning in the 1980s and continuing to the present. In this text, I suggest that my generation-the Millennials-were the first to undergo a full immersion experiment in a world of neoliberal corporate domination. The results? Chronic health conditions driven by a greed-obsessed, psychopathic corporate food industry that transformed food from a life-giving source-one that connects us to the greater body of Earth-into a laboratory-made product engineered for addiction. The effects? Serious gut and systemic health issues for my generation and for all others who fell prey to the dark spread of corporate influence in food. This text examines my personal journey through a critical lens, focusing on the dynamics of alienation that gave rise to this corporate-dominated state. Fundamentally, the consciousness of the separate self led to this collective insanity-bankrupt values and extractive, vulture-minded institutions that take and take, despoiling our communities, natural environments, and our minds and bodies. I tell my story-how the system owned me: how it conditioned me into a broken soul with a fragmented psyche and narcissistic tendencies; how it led me down a path of intense alienation and misery; and how it nearly killed me through addictions to its fake, delicious, deadly foodstuffs. I tell the story of my breakdown and rebirth through the ancient wisdom traditions of the East, as well as the plant medicine paths of South America. I recovered my health and my empowerment, and now I tell this story so that others may find resonance-and the will to continue toward the dream of a better tomorrow, for us all.
