Overview

Marrying your high school sweetheart may be seen as the perfect love story in many women's eyes. For Magdala Jean-Gilles, the beginning to a perfect love story led to a not so perfect ending. Captain of her varsity girls' basketball team, Gilles met a shy new varsity football player in her junior year of high school. The two athletes' close friendship blossomed into young love all throughout their senior year at North Miami Beach High School. Gilles pursued her basketball dreams at Broward College, while her boyfriend pursued his football dreams at the University of Georgia. Graduating from the University of Tampa with a bachelor's in sociology, she followed her boyfriend all the way to his spot in the NFL Draft. In 2005, the budding football star was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. The couple got married in 2007, five months into her pregnancy with their son Marcus. Foreign to the flashy and fast-paced business of the NFL, Gilles was exposed to the superficial life of trophy wives, glitz and glamour. What started off as a big success for the newlyweds, ended in marital distress. Ignoring all the red flags signaling to the end of the marriage, Gilles did everything in her power to save the crumbling relationship. The breaking point of the marriage came when her husband kicked Gilles and their son out of the house. Finalized in 2014, the couple's divorce left Gilles to fend for herself and her son Marcus. Kicked out of the life of NFL Wife luxury, she struggled to readjust to a normal lifestyle as a single mother. Months of deep depression led to the single mother picking herself up when she began to write about the trials and tribulations in her tumultuous marriage. In her upcoming book, How to not be an NFL Wife, Gilles discusses her ups and downs being married to a NFL player. From fame and success to nearly hitting rock bottom, the book describes the process of what she calls giving up my dream to be his queen. A victim of domestic violence and emotional abuse, the entrepreneur emphasizes the need for individuality in a relationship. Gilles is on a heartfelt mission to empower women around the world to be themselves, love themselves and uplift each other. She plans on starting a social network where fellow ex-NFL wives can connect with others. Gilles hopes to not only empower women but inform them on issues regarding relationships, marriages and career goals.
