OverviewThe Buryat Mongol people live in Southern Siberia, some in Mongolia and some in the Russian Federation state of Buryatia. They have a form of shamanism which has developed over many centuries, and which incorporates aspects of traditional Mongolian shamanism combined with some aspects of Tibetan Buddhism. Part of their way of working is to use two types of ritual staffs, Horse-headed and Dragon-headed. The Horse staffs are the domain of the Powerful Black shamans, who often work with fierce spirits, mostly from the Under World; and the White shamans work with the Dragon staffs, and connect with peaceful Upper World, Sky spirits and Dragons. Both kinds of shamans perform ancient traditions of Weather Magic, Prosperity Calling, Blessing, Healing and Soul Retrieval work, and their staffs are often important aspects in this work. This book shines a fascinating light on a little-known and powerful area of traditional Mongolian shamanic practice.
