Reviews

The name Jake Maddox has become synonymous with sports books for kids, and these two titles depict the lives of young athletes with maturity and depth. In Horseback Hardships, Leah moves to a new town, which comes with challenges to her love of riding horses, as her passion creates both friendship and strife among others. Rock 'n' Goal, and underdog soccer story for new player Robert, is a study of how the loss of a loved one can be both debilitating and encouraging at the same time. Added to both heartfelt stories is plenty of vocabulary and information to help readers unfamiliar with the sport gain knowledge. Leah and Robert are positive examples of young people who don't let hardship stop them from becoming the best version of themselves. VERDICT This series continues to enrich the lives of those it reaches, motivating kids to excel in sports and foster a love of reading.-- ""School Library Journal""

Author Information

Who is Jake Maddox? Athlete, author, world-traveler - or all three? He has surfed in Hawaii, scuba-dived in Australia, and climbed the mountains of Peru and Alaska. His books range from the most popular team sports to outdoor activities to survival adventures and even to auto racing. His exploits have inspired numerous writers to walk in his footsteps - literally! Each of his stories is stamped with teamwork, fair play, and a strong sense of self-worth and discipline. Always a team-player, Maddox realizes it takes more than one man (or woman) to create a book good enough for a young reader. He hopes the lessons learned on the court, field, or arena and the champion sprinter pace of his books can motivate kids to become better athletes and lifelong readers. Bere Muniz is a mexican artist from Monterrey. She has been drawing and coloring comics since 2009. Her work can be found on several children books in her country, where she lives with her beloved partner in crime, a shaggy dog and four cats.
