Overview

Horace was one of the greatest poets during the reign of Augustus and is seen as mark of cultural sophistication since this time. This Very Short Introduction examines how Horace's poetry has exerted enormous influence but argues that it is best understood within the traditions of ancient literature. Author Information

Llewelyn Morgan has taught Greek and Roman languages and literature at Brasenose College for twenty-five years, and before that at University College Dublin. He has published books on Virgil, Ovid, poetic meter, the Buddhas of Bamiyan, and nineteenth-century archaeology in Northwest India, and articles on many aspects of Greco-Roman literature. He is particularly active in promoting classics in schools, and has also made regular appearances in classics-related radio programs. Morgan is the author of Ovid: A Very Short Introduction. As the middle of six children, Michael Langan quickly carved out his space in the group; he was the storyteller. Out in the real world, he would gravitate to office and administration roles until he quit his job in 2020, deciding to become a full-time voice-over artist and a background artist in film and television productions. When he's not on set, in his home studio, or being forcibly dragged across rugby fields by his dog Oisin, he can be found in his kitchen, setting off the fire alarm on a regular basis with his attempts at cooking and baking.
