In all its particulars--size, lay-out, font, page color, illustrations--it is a treat for the eyes. And the writing--clear and focused, friendly and engaging--is not only entertaining, but informative as all get out. The premise of Jim Dent's book, Hops and History, is that a great deal of America's cultural history is held--embottled, one wants to say--in America's beers and breweries, a premise so obvious, now that he's written the book, one wonders why it hasn't been done before. Each page is a brewery, a beer and a story--275 of them. And each of those essays is like a slice of really good apple pie--the kind with a flaky crust and tart apples whose slices are still discernible--served with a hunk of aged, room-temperature cheddar. This would be a perfect gift book for the beer aficionados among us. I've already started my list. Whether you enjoy American history AND/OR love planning trips to visit new breweries this book is a fantastic tour guide...When you buy this book (and you should) you will revel in the spirit of every American person, place or event included. You'll meet charismatic animals, criminals and outlaws, heroes and heroines, our Founding Fathers, military battles/wars, famous writers, National Parks and famous nature trails, inventors...the topics are varied and all provide an interesting glimpse (one topic/brewery per page) into the makings of our 243 year-old country. So fun and informational. Author InformationJim Dent has spent the majority of his professional career working as a schoolteacher. He has attended a number of schools and holds degrees from both Penn State and Clemson University. He now lives in beautiful Boise, ID. Hops and History is his first book.
