Honk! If You Love the NHS

Overview

A resident doctors' strike, unionised butchers, and the same old hapless politicians. What (more) could possibly go wrong? When the government's ruthless solution to an overwhelmed National Health Service is to start treating patients like farm animals, the British public is thrust into unimaginable chaos. Caught in the crossfire is Dougie Warren, an ex-rugby player and fiercely principled Yorkshire slaughterhouse worker. Beside him is Boris, a wildly pompous and dangerously unqualified trainee butcher. While the two protagonists may not agree on politics, their chaotic friendship leads them to the centre of a national scandal. As government ministers hatch increasingly absurd schemes to force their policies through, the boundaries between a pristine A&E ward and the bloody reality of the abattoir begin to blur. From the picket line to the corridors of power, this is contemporary Britain unravelling in grotesque style. HONK! If You Love the NHS skewers the bureaucracy and madness of modern Britain with comic precision.Darkly funny and unnervingly familiar, David Swift's farcical second novel is disturbingly plausible; it is a political satire that some might say slices into the present moment with the precision of a surgeon's scalpel... or perhaps a butcher's cleaver!
