OverviewWe meet Susan Standish on her first day at her new job, Manager of Honeydale care home. She is well qualified but has never been responsible for a setting with forty vulnerable residents and twenty staff before. Her previous position was a home manager but with only six residents. Dan Everett is a young man in his 30s and now the general manager of the home and part of the Everett family who have owned the home for generations. Dan meets her to greet and show her round. Now and again birdsong comes into the room, that is Susan's phone, and almost always it is her mother wanting to talk about Susan's brother, Susan would rather not, he has been trouble in the past and she needs to concentrate on her new life at Honeydale. When a new resident, Julia Shaw arrives some interesting minor mysteries occur and Susan discovers a riding school behind the home run by Ruth Curtis. Then a mystery that is certainly not minor occurs and the police are involved. In chapters 8 and 9 we are taken back to the 1900s and introduced to the gypsies who visited every year to fruit pick. One year a young member of the Everett family disappears and eventually it is presumed she is dead. Eventually a body is found.
