Overview

Honey and Mahogany is a heartfelt story telling a tale of biracial children growing up and noticing that the world looks at their family weird as they play at the park and walk around town. The story begins by setting the stage of introducing a biracial couple falling in love and beginning a family. As the children grow up, they become aware of their family's differences. The children ask their parents why people look at them when they are around town. The parents sit the children down and explain to them the beauty that is added to the world due to their children's different skin tones. The colors of Honey Bronze and Rich Mahogany make the children unique and showcases true love. At the end of the story, the children proclaim their joy in their family's love and uniqueness. The children are proud of their skin tones and learn how to embrace their differences when others stare at their family. Honey and Mahogany is a lovely story for biracial children of all colors and skin tones, not just the ones that look like the characters inside the book. The hope is that through the story, parents and children can have a moment and conversation to help name their own skin tones, as each biracial child is wonderfully and perfectly designed by God and deserve to feel pride in the way they look to the world, just like Devon and Ella in the story. Heather R. Phillips is an inspiring author and activist. Heather knew she wanted to utilize her passion for writing to bring about more representation for biracial children in children's books. In her professional career, Heather is an activist working towards racial and social justice. Heather R. Phillips lives by the statues and values outlined by the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and continues to hope that her children grow up in a world that seeing no color and focuses on light and love. Honey and Mahogany is Heather's writing debut, and her hope is to bring joy to biracial families of all shades and colors of skin tones. She believes that everyone deserves to be proud of who they are because every child is perfectly and wonderfully created by God. Heather stands on the foundation of light and the dedication to bring unity to the world.
