Overview

Originally published in 1872, this work is based on the author's experiences in the town of Oberammergau, Germany, the site of the world-famous Passion Play. Greatorix, a famous illustrator of the period, recounts her three-month stay during which time she illustrated 20 of the town's famous homes. The book is placed into an historical context, but also describes the play as it was performed during that time.

Gordon R. Mork studied history and German at Yale, Heidelberg, and the University of Minnesota. He attended the Oberammergau Passion Play in 1984 and in 1990 and has published several articles and essays on the controversies surrounding the town and the play.
