"A fascinating tour de force, ""Homes Down East: Classic Maine Coastal Cottages and Town Houses"" is very highly recommended for professional and academic Architectural Studies reference collections. Exceptionally well written, organized and presented, ""Homes Down East: Classic Maine Coastal Cottages and Town Houses"" is especially commended to the attention of non-specialist general readers with an interest in Maine cottage and town house architecture.--John Burroughs, Reviewer ""Midwest Book Review, Reviewers Bookwatch"" Homes Down East is a rarity: a handsome book that will satisfy the appetite of old-house aficionados and prove of lasting value to serious scholars of architectural history. Most welcome is the appearance of the houses of Maine's popular John Calvin Stevens set within the context of his lesser-known peers.--James F. O'Gorman, NcNeil Professor Emeritus, Former Chair of Maine Historic Preservation Commission This fascinating book -- combining historical scholarship with critical commentary, and architect's plans and early photographs with contemporary images -- offers invaluable insights into an especially fruitful era of domestic architecture in coastal Maine.--Henry N. Cobb, Founding partner (with I. M .Pei) of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners This fascinating book provides a field guide and a field day for the reader, capturing Maine's seminal role in the development of the first truly American architecture, the Shingle Style. Homes Down East is a must-have book for those with casual or in-depth interest in the iconic Maine coastal cottage.--Gregg Paxton, Executive Director, Maine Preservation"

Author Information

Christopher Glass is an architectural historian and architect. He is the former chairman of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and taught Architectural Design at Bowdoin College. He lives in Camden, Maine. SCOTT T. HANSON (Topsham, ME) has thought deeply about the renovation of historic homes in his 40 years as a designer, carpenter, municipal historic district regulator, historic preservation consultant, and architectural historian. His own 15-year renovation of a historic house, doing the vast majority of the work himself, has allowed him to put his ideas to the test and to learn from his mistakes while accumulating the library of how-to photos that illustrates this book. Scott is Director of Preservation Consulting Services with Sutherland Conservation & Consulting and has researched and written numerous National Register nominations and Maine Historic Building Record documentation projects. He is the co-author of Homes Down East: Classic Maine Coastal Cottages and Town Houses.
