Overview

Awarded Second Place--Nonfiction Books for Adults--Humor by the Woman's Press Club of Indiana, 2019 Communications Contest ""Professionally dirty clothes,"" ""The MulchMobile,"" ""The Gardener's Handshake,"" ""Thanksgiving Conversation Starters for Gardeners,"" and ""Going Steady with a Grower"" are just a few of the delightful subjects covered in Homegrown and Handpicked: A Year in a Gardening Life. Read it to discover if you have an eccentric gardener in your neighborhood or to see if, gasp, you are the eccentric gardener in your neighborhood. The sequel to the popular essay book, Potted and Pruned: Living a Gardening Life, which taught us about gardening math, distance, time, and other important fundamentals, Homegrown and Handpicked is a journey through the seasons, with just as many laugh-out-loud, hey-that's-me stories as the first book. Read to remember why you love gardening, and keep returning to your garden again and again, despite the bugs, weeds, and marauding garden fairies running off with your tools. ""A wonderful follow up to Carol Michel's first book of gardening humor! Filled with vignettes, gardening tips, letters, advice, and more; this little collection is pure fun. Just as with here first collection, this book inspires the reader to get out there and start gardening, right this second! It's cute and inspiring; and reading it at this time of year (spring) makes me want to do even more in my yard. I can't wait to get my hand on the third book in this trilogy, if anything like the first two it's going to be amazing: )"" - Erin Cataldi, Librarian

"Praise for Homegrown and Handpicked: A Year in a Gardening Life Carol Michel refuses to sell reject garden tools at her yard sale for fear that starting new gardeners off with sub-standard equipment might put them off gardening forever. She leaves a few pulled weeds strategically placed around her garden, to scare the other weeds into leaving. Even when she reprimands those of us who cage rather than stake our tomatoes, there is humor in her reproach. Every gardener will see something of him or herself in this book, although we can't all be as funny and articulate as Ms. Michel. Her friendly, entertaining, and realistic approach to gardening is inspiring, and her passion is contagious. And just when you think she's all about the funny stuff, her poignant tribute to the importance of garden books and generations of gardening wisdom may just bring a tear to your eye. Ellen Zachos, author of ""The Wildcrafted Cocktail"" and ""Backyard Foraging"". ""Warm, witty, and ripe with Carol's signature storytelling style, Homegrown and Handpicked is filled to the brim with bite-sized tales of real life gardening confessions and lessons. I hereby declare her Camp Garden-A-Lot's Camper of the Week!"" Jessica Walliser, author of Container Gardening Complete: Creative Projects for Growing Vegetables and Flowers in Small Spaces Praise for Potted and Pruned: Living a Gardening Life ""Comedians categorize types of laughter, including the laugh of recognition. That's what Potted and Pruned evokes--all gardeners can see themselves and their foibles in this series of charming essays. Ms. Michel also manages to slyly insert great gardening advice among her observations--who knew that the 25-minute Pomodoro Technique for time management could be applied to outdoor tasks? An enjoyable must-read for garden lovers everywhere. Mary-Kate Mackey, author of Write Better Right Now: The Reluctant Writer's Guide to Confident Communication and Self-Assured Style ""What better way to enjoy learning the ups and downs of gardening than with a good dose of humor. Great book for anyone who's tried their hand at growing. And if you don't garden, this book might just inspire you to see what garden adventures could lay ahead for you. Keep it on the side table to read for a chuckle after a long hard day. Carol, thank you for making gardening fun again!"" Barbara Wise, author of Container Gardening for All Seasons: Enjoy Year-Round Color with 101 Designs."
