Overview

Thoughtful Finn explores many fun and inspiring towns to find his home sweet home. He challenges himself through bravery, determination, and curiosity all while visiting each color of the color wheel. As Finn discovers new places to see, he practices observation and literacy which inspires him to keep going on his journey to find a comfortable place to call home. Finn is an artist and loves the colors, patterns and shapes he sees. This unique story is inspired by foundational methods of art making for budding artists of all ages. Award-winning art teacher, artist, and illustrator Courtney Ries has not only developed a clever story encouraging readers to learn about discovery, but she has also incorporated Finn's Art Lessons after the story and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) methods as a fun bonus for all. This book serves as a platform for readers, parents, and educators to easily comprehend simplified examples of how Finn exhibits three of the five social emotional learning traits. Finn uses the remaining two SEL methods in the next book of this thought-provoking series meant for artists, teachers, readers of all ages, and anyone who is looking for a fun way to be inspired to make art or find the energy to complete a mission, big or small. This cute little book is beautifully hand drawn and colored as well as written in a clever way by the author-illustrator who created this story to inspire students to learn about color in a thought provoking way. Readers are delightfully inspired to seek adventure, be brave, and develop self-trust. Finn's Art Lessons help artists, students, and teachers learn art methods and application in a relatable way. Finn's SEL Lessons will help parents, students, and teachers apply examples of how to grow socially and emotionally along the way in life's varied adventures. Have fun with Finn and let him inspire you.

An excellent adventure for all ages to be inspired by, triumphant and beautiful to look at! Such a fun and inspiring book for all readers and artists who want to learn more about color and how it is used. A sweet story about bravery, determination, self-esteem, self-realization, fun, inspiration, a journey to find home, and a learning activity for art teachers, teachers, and students alike. What a joy! Superb story and visual imagery in order to inspire students, readers, parents, and teachers! Very thoughtful story showcasing how someone can make a goal, stick with it, and prove big things to themselves all while featuring beautiful artwork, art lessons and social emotional learning applications as bonus material. Not only is this story cute and inspiring but the award-winning artist, art teacher, and author chose to create art lessons in the back to help all learners and teachers to have simplified explanations of art methods and SEL examples. Easily comparable to Dr. Seuss mixed with Where's Waldo-esque mystery

Author Information

Award-winning visual arts teacher, Courtney Ries is the author and illustrator of this sweet and beautiful book about bravery and determination. Inspired by her art students and her own young children--Julien and Elliott, her intention was to make an art guide for them with a story of perseverance. Courtney has loved to draw from a very young age and has always held a passion for architecture, pattern, and color. Nonobjective design paired with the love of drawing oblong and unique buildings ignited the decorative elements of this book along with landscapes consisting of islands, hills, and beloved red rock. Courtney initially designed the first version of this book over ten years ago. In the summer of 2021, she decided to redraw the entire 14 page accordion-style book to revamp it as an art piece for her sons. One month after finishing the redraw, she wrote the story of Finn traveling through the book to find home sweet home. The next story is a continuation of Finn's journey as he learns about himself in a different way all while enchanted by new decorative elements of art and design in the whimsical style Courtney provides in her illustrations and stories. This mom-wife-teacher-artist-author-illustrator-architecture enthusiast and southern California native has many inspiring stories to tell reflecting the challenges and accomplishments she has experienced in her own life.
