Overview

The person with a spinal cord injury must receive proper care from the moment of the injury until their complete rehabilitation and social reintegration. In the process of home rehabilitation, nurses act as carers, teachers and even counsellors; through the Systematisation of Nursing Care, they develop an individualised, holistic care plan and encourage clients to identify their potential and develop goals, using their skills and appropriate resources to adapt to their new condition and maintain a good quality of life, with independence and self-respect. Working in the home, nurses can understand the needs and nuances of the daily life of the person being cared for, their socio-cultural and environmental context, their thoughts, doubts and feelings, facilitating the identification of motivational factors or not, for seeking and maintaining health. The use of the Roper-Logan-Tierney model provides a good basis for this type of work, since it is based on a life model and its main concept is 12 life activities carried out by human beings.
